Tragedy Strikes Lewiston, Maine: Multiple Shootings Leave 16 Dead, Dozens Injured
A Night of Horror Unfolds as Authorities Hunt for Possible 2nd Suspect
Tragedy struck Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night, with at least 16 people losing their lives in a series of shootings. Around 50 to 60 people were injured, though it remains uncertain how many of them were wounded by gunfire. Law enforcement sources reported that a suspect was still at large, prompting the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office to call for businesses to lock down and close for investigation.
Images of the suspect, brandishing a high-powered assault-style rifle, were released by the sheriff's office, and the Maine State Police also responded to the active shooter situation. They urged residents to stay indoors with locked doors and to report any suspicious activity by calling 911. The shootings occurred at various locations, including a bowling alley, a bar & grille restaurant, and a Walmart Distribution Center in Lewiston.
Nearby Auburn, Maine, which is less than 2 miles west of Lewiston, issued a strong call for residents to shelter in place. The FBI offered its personnel and resources to support local authorities, and Maine Governor Janet Mills has been briefed on the situation, urging the public to follow the guidance of state and local law enforcement.
