Off-Duty Alaska Airlines Pilot Faces 83 Counts of Attempted Murder After Mid-Flight Engine Scare
Off-duty pilot Joseph David Emerson, while aboard a San Francisco-bound Alaska Airlines flight, attempted to activate the jet's fire-suppression system mid-flight in an attempt to bring it down. This act, which could have resulted in catastrophic consequences, has led to Emerson being charged with 83 counts of attempted murder. The incident occurred on Flight 2059, operated by Horizon Air, and was only averted thanks to the quick response of the flight crew, who managed to secure the aircraft and make an emergency diversion to Portland International Airport. Emerson is currently in custody, awaiting arraignment. The investigation is still ongoing, but social media found by Andy Ngo show Emerson liked a post that called for Jan 6 people to be quote, crushed. The Air Line Pilots Association International praised the flight crew's swift response and highlighted the rigorous evaluation process that pilots undergo throughout their careers.
