Coup In Moscow

"Inside Wagner: The Secretive Mercenary Army Behind Putin's Grip on Power"

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief financier and face of the Wagner Group, a private military company (PMC), has become increasingly bold in challenging Russian President Vladimir Putin's grip on power. Prigozhin claims that his 25,000-strong Wagner militia has taken control of the city of Rostov-on-Don and has openly accused Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia's top general, Valery Gerasimov, of incompetence. The Wagner Group, founded in 2014, has been involved in conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and the Russian intervention in Syria. It operates as Putin's personal band of enforcers and is partially controlled by Prigozhin and Russia's military intelligence organization, the GRU. Other key figures in the Wagner Group include Dmitry Utkin and Andrei Troshev, operational commanders; Konstantin Pikalov, responsible for operations in Africa; Igor Kostyukov, director of Russian Military Intelligence; and Alexei Dyumin, the current governor of Russia's Tula region. The Wagner Group has gained notoriety for its violence, brutality, and ruthless methods in achieving its goals. Prigozhin has been openly critical of Putin and Russia's military leadership, leading to tensions between the Wagner Group and the Russian government.
