Bud Light's Controversial Transgender Campaign Backfires: Sales Plummet and Stock Value Tanks
Backlash, Boycotts, and Market Loss: The Fallout from Bud Light's Transgender Marketing Campaign
Despite cratering sales and stock price, Bud Light and the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) have announced an expansion of their partnership, with Bud Light donating $200,000 to the NGLCC's Communities of Color Initiative. This initiative supports LGBTQ business owners from diverse backgrounds by offering certificates, scholarships, and business development opportunities. The funds will specifically support the NGLCC's CoCi Biz Pitch, a competition for minority LGBTQ business owners.
This has been interpreted by many as a doubling down by Anhieser Busch In Bev after its failed marketing campaign featuring transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney. Bud Light has faced significant backlash, leading to boycotts, falling sales, and a decrease in the market value of its parent company. The company's market value has dropped by around 27 billion, falling to one hundred seven point four four billion by the end of May from one hundred thirty four point five fiveĀ billion in March. The stock is down nearly 20% from its March high, close to entering bear market territory. The controversy surrounding the campaign has caused strong reactions from beer loyalists, who believe it takes the brand into unrelated territory. Anheiser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth expressed that the company never intended to be part of a divisive discussion and aims to bring people together over a beer. In other words, he refuses to apologize to its customers. As a result of poor leadership, HSBC analysts have downgraded the stock, citing uncertainties in reversing declining volume, brand relevance, and distributors' trust. Recent sales data indicates sluggish performance, with a 29.5% drop in sales volume for Bud Light compared to the same period the previous year. In contrast, competitors such as Molson Coors, Constellation Brands, and Boston Beer have seen their shares rise during this period.
